The Caves of Nerja, declared Historical and Artistic Monument of Cultural Interest, are located in the foothills of Sierra Almijara, near the village of Maro, in the east of Nerja, about four kilometers from the town.
They were discovered in 1959 when five young men from Maro and Nerja decided to get bats from a cavity known as the Mine of the Cementery.
After such important discovery, numerous investigations and examinations were performed and it was verified that it was a
natural treasure of incalculable value. Therefore, it was decided to adapt and prepare them for tourist use. In June 1960 the caves were opened with the celebration of the First Festival of Music and Dance Caves of Nerja.
If you finally decide to visit The Caves of Nerja with our Spanish Language School in Nerja, you will have the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful, awesome and interesting caves in Europe due to the formation of karst cavities caused by the erosion that produces water in marble.
We must mention the great central column of the Hall of Cataclysm, which is 32 meters high and where about 1000 billion drops of water were needed to form this column.
Apart from the karst cavities, in 2012 were discovered some paintings of seals which are calculated to be 42 000 years old and which are estimated to be the first work of art in the history of mankind.
