History
Less than one hour from Málaga Airport and almost equidistant from the famous Andalusian cities of Granada, Seville, Córdoba, Ronda, and just across from the coast of Morocco, Nerja is known world-wide for its open welcome to all people and for its spectacular Caves where an international music festival takes place. A must for any visitor to the Costa del Sol is a IX century fortification crowned as the “Balcony of Europe”. In the very heart of Nerja, this romantic setting is today the focus of many cultural activities and a popular meeting place. This scenic promenade adorned with palm trees and exotic plants provides an exceptional view of the Mediterranean. To stroll along the streets and promenades of Nerja is a joy to the eye. Who wouldn’t envy Nerja´s 16 km of coastline, over 3.500 hours of annual sunshine and temperatures that average 25° C in summer and 15° in winter ? Together with its varied social life, many fiestas, exhibitions, new sports stadium, concerts and theatre, Nerja has evolved into a town hard to beat.
How to get to Nerja
By Airplane
The easiest way is to fly to Malaga (Malaga International Airport is Pablo Ruiz Picasso). This city is +/- 52 km from Nerja.
- From the airport you can take a bus to the bus station in Malaga or a train to the central train station in Málaga (Estación María Zambrano). There are trains and busses every half-hour, +/- 1 euro. From this central bus station, a bus goes every hour to Nerja (trip length about 1 hour and 30 minutes, +/- 4 euro).
- Or you can take a taxi from the Malaga airport to Nerja. Trip length about 45 mnutes and price is +/- 95 euro.
By Car
Nerja is at some 50 km from Malaga, and at 40 km from Motril, which means that the connection between these two cities by car is pretty easy.
The Autovia Nacional 340 passes through Nerja and is the best way to get here by car.
You will need to take exit 292 to get here, regardless if you’re coming from Motril or from Malaga.
By Bus
Málaga is 50 km from Nerja. There are dairy busses every +/- 60 minutes from 8:00 h. till 23:00 h. Trip length about 90 minutes. Price is +/- 4 euro.

By Train
To get to Nerja by train, you will need to go to Malaga first (Estación María Zambrano), to the RENFE station there.
You can also go to the RENFE train station in Granada, though Malaga is much closer, only 50 km. Granada is about 100 km away. After taking the train, you will need to take the bus or rent a car to go to Nerja. Train timetable can be found at: www.renfe.es
