Spanish, fourth most studied language (Spanish study)
Two million students between the ages of 11 and 15 learned Spanish in the European Union (EU) during 2014. That is to say, the fourth most studied language in secondary school, according to the Community statistics office. Spanish is popular among teenagers in Sweden (43.9%), France (37.8%), Italy (22%), Portugal (20.8%) and Ireland (15.4%). English is followed by French (5 million, 34% of pupils), German (3 million, 23%), Spanish (2 million, 13%), Russian (0.5 million, 3%) and Italian (0.2 million, 1%). In Spain, 93.7% of pupils learn a language and only 5.8% take classes in two or more languages.
Primary school pupils learn two or more languages in Luxembourg (83.5%), Estonia (32.6%) and Greece (28.7%). However, less than half of the children in Portugal (36.2%), Belgium (37%) and Slovenia (48.4%) receive lessons in a foreign language.
